Starting at Achadas do Teixeira, this trail takes walkers up to Pico Ruivo, the highest peak of Madeira Island with 1861 metres altitude.
Along the way you will come across several shelters, where you can stop for a rest, have a snack or take shelter from the thick fog that sometimes covers this whole area.
As the walker advances, there are wonderful landscapes made up of the imposing mountains and peaks of the island, such as Pico das Torres and Pico do Areeiro. Moreover, in this landscape full of mountains, sea and people, it is still possible to distinguish the rock of Penha d’Águia and the tip of São Lourenço.
Near the Pico Ruivo shelter, you will find the accesses to 3 paths that lead to different points on the island: the PR1 – Pico do Areeiro Footpath, the PR13 – Encumeada Footpath and the PR1.1 – Ilha Footpath.
On reaching Pico Ruivo, the hiker can marvel at the magnificent landscape that surrounds it. Observe the grandeur of the peaks, the villages and their agricultural land, the sea and the clouds. Enjoy the feeling of grandeur that this place provides!
